WiFi Access Point

I’m trying to set up an access point, but I can’t find the options in the system.

I’ve looked through many options on this forum, but I can’t find anything.

All I find is this third party external access stuff.

Are there any modules for HOSTAPD and IW ?

Wifi isn’t supported yet, see also NethSecurity Alpha 2 is ready 🛡 - #11 by giacomo

But it allows for HotSpot, so it has Wirelss Fidelity already in there I would have thought.

How can I upgrade to Alpha 2? Does it have WiFi?

Sorry, wifi is not supported.

The hotspot uses external wifi devices. Aplha 2 is an old version, I just wanted to point out that wifi isn’t supported.

thansk, I’ve replied to it, if they want I’ll get the Wifi AP set up within a few hours.

Depends on how they are working the GUI thoguh.

It’s hard to give support about wifi issues and that’s the reason it’s not supported yet.

The WiFi setup and configuration isn’t that hard with HOSTAPD. Honestly extremely easy.

Sorry, maybe I didn’t formulate well.

While it may be “extremely easy” to implement, it means a lot of support tickets about wifi issues and that’s the reason, it’s not supported yet.

If it’s done correctly then there wouldn’t be many support tickets for issues that just basic things…

Well, as long as the end users actually read the screen.

And yes, answering tickets on the issues would be easy to resolve if it’s all set up correctly in the system. That is what I mean by easy.

Easy to set up, easy to implement, easy to resolve basic issues.

As long as they have the hardware in the systems that allow it then it’s easy.

I can set my WiFi NIC up for single AP or multi-segregated SSIDs that are on different bridges and routes in about 10-15 seconds.

Only a few lines of code.

So I’ll look into OpenWRT some more and see what I can do to impliment it into the current NetSec 8-24.10.0-ns.1.6.0.

I really wish there was an installed version of the system so I could do things better though.

Just my preference for not having to use squashed file systems all the time.

Thanks, contributions are always welcome. Here’s the dev manual.

The current stable version of NethSec is 8.7.1, see also Download — NethSecurity documentation

So I have a later version than the current stable by what, 17 minor versions?

Thanks for the link to the dev stuff, should be interesting to work with. I’ll have to get another machine to get that and work that on.

Sorry, I think I don’t understand the question.

8-24.10.0-ns.1.6.0 is older than 8.7.1, just check the table on the download page, it’s sorted from new to old.

Well, I just updated to 8.7.1 I believe, and even just the initial login screen is completely broken.

It won’t even do a log in…

well, at least 8-24.10.0 works..

I will have to get this 8.7.1 and fix the UI I think.. Especially get rid of all this gawd aweful JavaShit.

In that case I recommend to do a fresh install of 8.7.1. It’s working here without issues.

did that, and it was still broken as hell.

Whatever people did to break the frontend Web GUI with all this stupid JavaScript between NethSecurity 8-25 and 8.7 I don’t know…

I’m not a javascript person, I like to keep things simple, and making the entire thing just javascript is just asking to be break. I thought it was my machine that was slow, but no, it’s the javascript.

So there is something wrong, and I don’t know what it is with 8.7. I don’t know why it is 8 dash 25 and then it changes to eight point seven.. Was it meant to be eight point twenty five?

So yes I am very confused, and I can’t make much sense out of the console from what is wrong either. All I could say is that it’s broken, very broken in 8.7.

8-25 works fine, so I’m having no issues with that. Once people get 8.7+ working again I will be able to start things with that and get the WiFi going on 8.7+ as well as 8-25. So for now I’ll just keep adding to 8-25 and improving my system until 8.7+ is fixed.

All I do is download the image, DD it onto the drive, repair the GPT (Why it isn’t using MBR I’ll never know…
But that’s it, it boots up fine, and all filesystems are completely in tact.

I wish I could change it to just be a normal system though, that way I would have control over it and make things better easier.

After that, I just connect the cable to the right port and then go to the login page, and that’s where it all falls apart on 8.7.1

Edit: Yes I tried multiple times. Yes I tried a brand new fresh and clean browser. Yes I did all the things that make no difference. Yes I tried everything that should have made a difference that I could think of.

Version 8.7.1 was released end of October 2025 and there were no support requests like yours so I really don’t know what’s wrong with your installation.

Did you follow the installation instructions?

Could you please share a screenshot of the broken web GUI?

Maybe try it on another hardware or virtualization?

The versioning was simplified.

8-24.10.0-ns.1.6.0 is like version 8.6.0 based on OpenWRT 24.10.0.

I followed it close enough yes. I just don’t do it all in one hit like that.

First I extract it, then I DD it, then I run FDISK and that repairs the GPT records using the new record and overwrites the backups with the new one. Thus making it work flawlessly on the drive.

Ahh, that explains the versioning….

I can load it up on the again maybe. I’ll just have to remove everything off the system externally first…

How do I get rid of the stuff on screen for the dropped connection attempts?
I can’t use the CLI while that’s hapenning…

I didn’t need the fdisk part. I’d just follow the documentation.
Maybe it helps to install from USB device?

Usually you can just press the “Enter” key and login on CLI.
