Yes, without the subformat=streamOptimized
option the images (Debian, Alma and Rocky) work but they are sized about 2 GB.
I tried several qemu-img options and VMWare vmkfstools but without getting a smaller working vmdk.
I uploaded the working vmdks here for testing.
Working qemu-img command:
qemu-img convert -f qcow2 -O vmdk ns8-image.qcow2 ns8-converted.vmdk
The qcow images (I didn’t test CentOS Stream) are working in Proxmox.
