My experience on Neth(Security/Server)-8

To all,

Searching for information about OpenWRT, I came across a video about NethSecurity-8 “E’ uscito NethSecurity 8 - Firewall OpenSource basato su OpenWrt - OpenVpn Yoroi e FlashStart ITA”, posted on Youtube only 2 days ago. I thought I should, once again, try NethSecurity - what a mistake on my part.

The first check I did was the update. Everything went well although the last time I tested the update of the first “stable” version of NethSecurity, at the end of the update, a note displayed that “xxx packages have been updated”. This note does not appear anymore. I thought: “It’s not a big deal”.

I then checked again if there were still updates. “4 ddns packages, 1 luci-app and 1 git” were still available. I update, still no note of the updated packages. I check a second time and again the same packages are still available. I try again and again the same packages are still available.

I reboot and again the same: “4 ddns packages, 1 luci-app and 1 git” were still available.

I do a “Factory reset”, I try an update and this time, NethSecurity displays that everything is up to date…

Since 2003, I have used: e-smith/SME/Koozali/NethServer and I have never seen a stable version with as many bugs as the first “stable” version of NethServer-8 (which was not even qualified for a BETA version). I stopped thinking about NethServer when I tested this first “stable” version.
I chose ISPconfig which offers all the possibilities that NS-7.9 offered and even more.

As for NethSecurity which is in its 4th “stable” version and which still contains bugs for the update… (which I have never seen in all the updates I have done in my IT career). It is beyond understanding.

A system that contains bugs in its update program is not worthy of being downloaded.

It is really time to look elsewhere.

I will only regret a few really knowledgeable people from this forum,

Michel-André

Perhaps you would like to reconsider? I would miss you.

I’m sorry to read that.

I tried an installation of NethSec now and can’t reproduce the issue. Did you update via the luci web interface or where did you see those missing updates?

Which image version did you use?

Hi @Markus,

I installed the latest “stable” version on a Proxmos VM.

I checked the checksum of both the tar and the extracted image.
The first update went OK.

I updated with LuCI as the documentation don’t content the cli command for the upadate only the cli command for an upgrade to a new version. Incomplete as usual for Nethesis documentation

Michel-André

Usually you should update via the NethSecurity web interface, check out Remote access — NethSecurity documentation and Updates — NethSecurity documentation

Maybe updating via luci produces issues.

Hi @mrmarkuz,

I wrote LuCI but it was with the manager at https://ip-address | System | Updates | Check for fixes.

I have a snapshot.
I can send you my AnyDesk number if you want to see it.

But really, I think I lost enough time with those amateur “stable” versions…

Please tell me the NethSecurity version, it’s on the update page or on the Dashboard.
Something like Installed release: NethSecurity 8-23.05.4-ns.1.2.0

I can’t reproduce on bare metal, I’ll retry on Proxmox…

EDIT:

Found the version in a previous post…

With all due respect, I would not wish to offend someone with the caliber of your experience and knowledge but, as witten above.

Again, I’m really sorry to read that.
Maybe it’s too strict to abandon a product because of an update issue.

By default the WAN interface is the second interface. Maybe the factory reset restored some network configuration or repos…

I’m still going to try to reproduce the issue on proxmox because if there’s a bug it should be solved.

It’s not just an update bug, but the one too many.

But I have to admit I wrote something wrong,

I should have written the 5th “stable” version because 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 = 5

My offer with AnyDesk is still valid…

Michel-André

I’m sorry, I can’t reproduce on Proxmox, after install and check for fixes it looks like this:

EDIT:

Wrote a PM about anydesk…

As written above, this was not there:

Update: After deleting the virtual hard disk in proxmox and reimporting the image the “wrong” updates didn’t appear anymore.

That’s the great spirit here.
I hope @michelandre will stay here.

I belief, for non-experts it’s too much new and too much to learn if you have to implement two new systems at the same time.

Best regards, Marko

With all due respect, but if I kept quiet, I would explode.

Update issue?
I don’t think any of you understand the problem. The “problem” is not just an update, the problem is that if you look at the forum, there are nothing but posts of errors and more errors. That if you have 10 clients with NS7, and of those 10, 9 give you errors, something is wrong.
I insist that on the official page it is indicated that it is simple, rich and solid (none of those 3 descriptions are good for it)
Simple is that you update and it updates correctly. Simple is that to do a task, even a child can do it through the web. Not that I have to be remembering and writing endless commands that can also lead to errors when writing them and who knows what can happen… Simple is not having to be tense every time I change something, to see if I don’t crash the system. Simple is being able to migrate my system without worrying, not having to dial 112 on the phone just in case and a long long etcetera.

The problem is that you can’t release a “stable” version when it isn’t. I said it at the time, all this looks like “running or the bull will catch us”.

This!

So no, it’s not because of a simple update. It’s that Nethesis is doing things wrong in my opinion. It’s losing confidence in a product that I have loved. It’s having to consider another alternative. It’s the fact that, coincidentally, you can never reproduce the errors. Logical! Each server is a world and there are thousands of factors that can change from one to another and what works perfectly for you, may not even start for me…

I’m one of those who continues with NS7. And here I’m going to stay. I don’t think I’ll “try” to update to NS8.

As my position has been made clear several times and the answer is basically always the same, I am also going to stop using NS (unless the situation changes a lot, which is impossible) and I will only come to read you from time to time.

I would like to thank all the people who have helped me in my dead ends, because if not, I would surely continue to be stuck. It has been a pleasure to share this forum with all of you. It is a great community at heart. It was nice while it lasted…

Hugs

Hi

I did offer help to @PCXLan.es but it seems he wasn’t interested in getting help.
Not my problem.

For my clients, most NS8 work quite OK - except for Samba.
New Samba setups work well, migration only runs into issues.

I have not had any update issues.

My 2 cents
Andy

Of course it’s not your problem. No, I don’t want your help, nobody asked for it, and with that air, even less so. Although it is appreciated anyway.

It’s not about helping someone use a product. It’s about making sure that the product can be used without problems and that if help is needed, this forum is there.
If I depend on you for everything I need, then we’re in trouble.
