It’s not about helping someone use a product. It’s about making sure that the product can be used without problems and that if help is needed, this forum is there.

As you may remember, I was just as disappointed, angry, disorientated and on the verge of giving up on Neth*.

But trusting in the community and the great, selfless, unreservedly helpful people, I gave myself a jolt.

In the meantime, I have:

• migrated an NS7 server with AD, SMB, Mail, NC and WordPress - hosted by a provider
• Set up an NS8 server as a Proxmox VM without mail and migrated DokuWiki manually
• built an NS8 server with AD, SMB, Mail, NC and WordPress - hosted by a provider

Everything works fine. I received considerable support from Markus and Andy. Without them, it would not have been possible.

And that’s a compliment and a big thank you to both of them, and less for Nethesis.
I seriously wonder how you can practice a business model

• that is based on software ‘maturing’ with the user to a degree that Microsoft hardly allowed itself in the worst of times;
• how you can make yourself dependent on the commitment of a few community members and
• how little they seem to test software themselves and put the quality assurance on the users and the community.
  Well, we practically get the software for free and pay for it with our willingness to take risks and our ability to suffer. Also a kind of ‘quid pro quo’.

I have massively reduced the level of complexity on my side by not even considering NethSecurity in my LAN and switching to UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra.
My OPNSense has been demoted to a DHCP/DNS server.
The UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra acts as a gateway, firewall, IDS, ad blocker and above all as a network management console.
In combination with my 2 UniFi Enterprise 8-port POE+ switches (connected via SFP link) and 2.5GB on each port as well as the WiFi7 Access Points, I have a network infrastructure that is easy to manage. In particular, the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra for 140€ cannot be beaten by any DIY board with OPNSense or NethSec. Neither in terms of functionality, and certainly not in terms of cost / effort.
But now I’ve drifted off a bit with all the enthusiasm.

I hope I have been able to encourage you not to throw in the towel.

I’ve spent way too much time on nethsecurity, it’s only because of my loyalty to Neth, but it’s just too much and too lacking. I had been mulling over a dream machine and thanks to you I had no idea the gateway ultra existed, and unbelievealby, is less than the mesh ap I just bought a few months ago. Unreal. $129 It’s no where near as capable and granular as the ngfw I run now but it’s usuable and better than a firewalla, which is better than … well you know.

So you’re quite happy with the gateway ultra?
Jeez, for $129 I’ll just order one today to play with even if I don’t end up using it.

Yes, I am really enthusiastic.
But the full power of the network management functions, you get in combination with the switches and APs.

Yeah, being able to manage the mesh access points with it is yet another plus. lets me ditch the controller server I’m running on one of the windows machines.

Since 2003, I have used: e-smith/SME/Koozali/NethServer and I have never seen a stable version with as many bugs as the first “stable” version of NethServer-8 (which was not even qualified for a BETA version). I stopped thinking about NethServer when I tested this first “stable” version.

Hi Micheal I’m so sorry to hear that.
Of course, every product has to go through various stages before being considered stable. I’m sorry that you’ve lost confidence in the meantime. As you’ve seen, we are finalizing a lot of new updates and features for both NethSecurity and NethServer. I hope you might change your mind in the future!
