Issue with Nethserver 8/7.9 for School Project

Good morning,
I’m a high school student working on a project where I’m trying to simulate a small company network, including a mail server, shared folders, and a home directory for each user. My issue is that I tried installing the free version of NethServer 8, but I couldn’t figure out how to create home directories for users. Also, when creating shared folders, I noticed that I could only assign basic privileges based on groups, rather than setting different permissions for each user individually. I then attempted to install NethServer 7.9, but the only version I found was an ISO on SourceForge (because I had tried using the CentOS installation process, but when I ran the command to install the .rpm file from the mirror, I received a 404 error). However, even with the .ISO, I encountered problems: when I flashed it onto a USB drive, every time I booted up my computer, it displayed that there was no bootable device connected. I also tried installing it on a virtual machine, where the installation went fine, but every time I started the VM, my device would lose its internet connection, and I encountered errors when trying to create a domain and shared folders.
So, after this long explanation, I’d like to ask if NethServer 8 or 7.9 would be better for my project, and if 7.9 is the better choice, how can I install it correctly?

Thanks in advance!

PS: I’m a newbie in this IT field.

Hi @Ib3x

And welcome to the NethServer Forum.
NethServer 7.9 is EOL since end of June 2024, so NS8 is really the only option.

You create users, the system (If AD and FileServer are installed) wll create user home shares automatically.

I also ask what virtualization are you using? I use Proxmox, anything else is much lesser!

This might help:

Thanks for the help. For NetServer 7.9, I used VirtualBox, whereas for NethServer 8, I used Rocky Linux 9.

Is an OS, Virtualbox is a Hypervisor Software. The two can’t compare.
Is your NS8 running virtualized or as a native install?

Native installation on Rocky Linux. I followed the process in the documentation using the curl method.

Hi Federico
Which kind of school? Why are you using NethServer?

Currently, I’m attending the fifth year of an ITI school, and I chose NethServer because I saw that it’s free and because NethServer is also made by Italians.
