What are the canonical email ports/settings?

I’m afraid I’m not quite clear on this from the docs. If I’m going to be working on automx in NS8,[1] I’d naturally want it to configure clients optimally, but I don’t see a definitive, or optimal, configuration documented anywhere. The version of autodiscovery built in to Webtop (Feat: autoconfiguration for email clients (#128) · NethServer/ns8-webtop@be95ba2 · GitHub) serves two different auto-configuration XML documents, and depending on whether you’re using Thunderbird (or compatible) or Outlook (or compatible), you’ll either get IMAP/143/STARTTLS or IMAPS/993/SSL. Likewise for SMTP.

So which should I use? IMAP/143/STARTTLS or IMAPS/993/SSL? SMTP/587/STARTTLS or SMTPS/465/SSL? Or does it really not matter?

Thanks for pointing it out.

RFC 8314 and later recommendations favor the “Implicit TLS” approach. The manual still refers to older standards based on STARTTLS negotiation.

It should be clearly stated[1] that in client configuration the recommended TCP ports are IMAPS 993 and SMTPS 465, while STARTTLS-negotiated ports — IMAP 143 and Submission 587 — should be avoided.
