Updates are mandatory, settings not available unless update executed

Hi,

If an update is available for an app, via Software Center the settings for instances is no longer available. One must execute the update before settings becomes available again.

example Nethvoice:

Updates should not be mandatory, but a choice. This may impact subsequent updates (and availability of previous un-applied updates) when updates are ignored between versions, one is simply behind, or a (strict) security policy is in effect.

Thanks

I don’t agree. You are not forced to update an application, and you can always access the app settings from the app drawer in the top-right corner of the screen.

As alternative, when an update is available, you can still access the app settings in the same way from the “Open App” action under the three-dots menu:

The card displays only the “primary action” button. Secondary actions are always accessible from the three-dots menu. Since the purpose of the Software Center is to install and keep applications up-to-date, “Open App” is considered a secondary action when an application update is available.

Ok thanks. That makes it much clearer to me. I haven’t looked, but I guess this is documented too.

You’re right.

But I think it’s time to implement automatic updates. I have a few servers running and I don’t check every day to see if there’s an update.

Besides, each update should include a link to the change logs.

NS8 has an HTTP API, so it is possible to write a Bash script that updates multiple clusters, if desired.

However, applying updates blindly is bad practice. As mentioned in other threads:

  1. Nethbot will notify the forum about NS8 updates, just like it does for NS7.
  2. The Software Center will display a link to the release information or show the release changelog directly.
  3. Automatic updates are already available if a subscription is active.
