The fun is gone: how to bring it back to our community?

Did anybody notice? The fun is gone.

No jokes, no small talk, no sharing, no music, no ‘Hi, how are you’, no silly things, just corporate stuff.

I am losing interest, I really do.

Yep man, you’re right. Every community has its ups and downs

how to bring it back to its old splendor?

Any ideas?

Most of the old crew has left already. I am afraid it is a little too late.

Take a look at the number of views of topics, there are no longer many viewers. Even this post only reached 25 views in the last 24 hrs.

I am not amused for you to change the topic to your personal agenda, it is called censorship. Another example…. So I know what to do.

Friends know my situation. Today my mother is in intensive care, and we’re scrambling to find money to pay for O-negative blood donations. The donors we found had consumed alcohol, and others contracted hepatitis. I wish I had more time for this wonderful community and to continue my development with NethSecurity.

I still read your posts and offer support whenever I can, but sometimes I feel like I’m tiring you all. I’m currently waiting to hear back from a job interview I had two days ago.

one main issue, nowadays you can go a whole week, without any new update, any new announcement, or anything to look up for.

it will definitely take alot of Efforts to bring this Back.

YEs, we do have alot of the old community members who have left, buet hey, i was a newby at some point in time, doesnt. mean we cant make efforts, to bring new users and members back.

Also, maybe AI has something to do with it. I dont know, just maybe, and we are also not at the fore front of he cool things happening.

I saw on one of the develoeprs’s repo, there was an Openclaw Module for NS8, but this was not announced, no communication around it, meaning, no new users, looking to selfhost openclaw, will find the community, and therefore NS8.

its the Little things that matters.

Also, NS8 to this Day, does not have proper videos, talking about the product, whether its sponsored videos, normal tech videos, or internal videos, just going through the many things NS8 can do.
These could pull new users, to the community, and offer points of engagement.

On numerous occasions, i have called for a community Hangout meeting, this was never folllowed up.
I called for Developers, hangout meetings,
this was also not followed up on, even some module devs, are very dormant.
@ community managers, i thought these were your dockets.

So alot of things, and alot of effrots, plus its not a one person agenda, or effrot that can get the job DOne. it needs to be holistic.

there are devs, here
sys admins,
noobs,

Marketers,
business admins,
etc, each one of these segments, needs to have something catering for them.

there should have been remote, community events, atleast, annually, while i know there is a physical meeting and hangout, for nehesis, there is nothing on nethserver front.

Different topic but still valid here…

However… lots of persons delivered criticism and “that won’t work in the same old way” claims.
As staten before from other persons, leaving the adoption is still an option, but deying, deflecting and hype-pumping… is really a good way for keeping people on that? IDK.

If the community contribution is not relevant anymore for compliance to other external instances, mr Fattorini… the persons leave.

Last but not least: globally is quite a sh*ty period.
It’s not the same brown stuff like COVID, but that years lead to more screentime for doing “something else” and “looking for something different” or more interesting. Now ongoing… trips close to EU and in middle East are going to hurt a lot the global economy, and with the little “AI-induced” hardware starve (i mean… Rpi 5 16gb started 120USD and now it’s 299 USD (source: Mr Jeff Geerling, still available here and there at 205USD but are warehouse prices) which is close to some N150 boxes…

Create a cluster homelab is quite difficult today, with pricier power bill due to… trips.

I’ve also found myself increasingly puzzled by the prevailing silence and have become a silent reader myself.

Why:

  1. My problems have always tended to be rather trivial in nature, but have always caused a lot of hassle for Andy, Steph or Markus. I have now tried to avoid this by consulting the AI. The answers have been surprisingly helpful, and I don’t always have to feel so guilty when busy people like Markus are kept occupied by me even in their free time.

  2. The forum’s vibrancy in the past was based on a large number of interesting questions. Today, most of it no longer interests me: NethSecurity.

  3. The other part, NethServer 8, seems to cause far fewer problems than NS7, hence also less activity in the forum.

  4. Much has already been written about another loss: Andy. He enriched the forum not only through his expertise, but also through his open and sometimes confrontational debates. The entertainment value was divine and is now missing.

  5. What used to motivate me to get to grips with NS7 better were the webinars and talks. Today, I’m just keeping my head above water because I still haven’t really grasped containerisation.

I’d love to understand how to manage such a container properly, analyse it in the event of an error, or even create one. But to be honest, I don’t know where to start.

Have you used Meet with a live translator? We could have a brief chat sometime, regardless of the languages. I’m going to the hospital. Hugs

How are you, brother? I hope you and your family are well.

hahaha, its not a bug, its a feature. Surprising the stability of a prodcut can have such an effect.
meaning tactics, and rules of engagement needs to change

We definitely needs these talks and webinars back. for existing memebrs, and for new ones.

NS8 has so many functions, most people have only grasped a portion of

Or simply don’t need it.

Sorry what do you mean? I think you misunderstood my intention as always :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: I just try to boost your discussion

That’s a good point, people are usual to ask AI and don’t search community answers

That’s a big question for us, which confirms your concerns

This is true as well.

Yep, I agree

I agree with @mrmarkuz as well. We chat about it today

The reader activity is the same as in 2025 (100k page views per month) and posts too, we still have 600 posts per month and 20 new signups per month.

There’s no big change but maybe more silent readers and less “engaging” or “fun” discussions

I’ll try to as constructive as possible, @alefattorini: you changed the message that was sent.
It was personal expression of discomfort, but with your edit you delivered a message from the OP for trying to boost the engagement of the community. Which is, by the way, amongs the goals of the Community Manager. Your role.
Therefore, I find totally compliant to what you did the words

because the message change serves better your role rather than the personal expression of the OP.

Among other things this way to deflect criticism o detour personal opinions around messages compliant to the project/company goals created even more discomfort, which also lead to less willing to interact here: who wants to be in place that (as a reply or edit), will deliver something different than expressed?
On one hand i can understand and respect that the project should be pushed more and gaining mor traction. As a matter of fact, the paradigm shift from the prevoius tech arrangement changed the adopters segment.
And answering “you’re wrong” won’t lead any of the writers to change ipso facto their mind. They dont feel listened that much… since years.

I’m not saying “you, as a person, are the problem”, because in some way won’t change a bit of it; in more of ways, this is also not true. However, among other things, some things/messages done on this community, is not helping the engagement.

The feeling I had (I think also other persons had it, but I didn’t do any poll or believe to know what’s in other person’s mind) is that if it’ s not compliant to some message, any contribution will be “changed” from the original post/thread feeling. This happened here into the title.

You’re saying two conflicting things at once, Pike: that Alessio acted correctly as a moderator, and that he shouldn’t have intervened.

From my perspective, he’s simply steering the discussion back in the right direction, in a constructive and solution-oriented way.

Let’s keep the conversation focused and maintain a constructive attitude.

Hi @davidep

The question is whether it makes sense for the moderator to intervene in this way right at the start of such a discussion. Why not just let things run their course and see how it develops?
