The domain name does not exist

this rarely happens, but it happens. I never understood what he meant. does it have to do with the dns server? why does it happen?

Yes: squid it’s not able to resolve the name.

See also: squid : dns_timeout configuration directive

I read: “DNS Query timeout. If no response is received to a DNS query within this time all DNS servers for the queried domain are assumed to be unavailable.”

I do not think it’s been 30 seconds since I hit enter on the keyboard until I received this message.

Squid is not resolving the name, it can be for 2 reasons:

  • timeout if the dns doesn’t respond
  • record not found

I guess you’re hitting the second case: https://support.opendns.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/115000434548-How-can-I-look-up-what-id-opendns-com-is-associated-with-
