Sogo hangs "No child available to handle incoming request"

I needed to restart my server for a VM update and now my Sogo hangs after a short time.
There are only 4 users with approx. 6 devices. Nothing changed here i a log time
But restarting the Sogo App it all works. But resarting every hours doesn’t sound normal

Hi @madpatrick,

I looked at your logs carefully.

The root cause is clear. Your SOGo workers are all tied up by ActiveSync Ping connections. Each iPhone or mobile device connected via ActiveSync holds one worker permanently in a 30-second long-poll loop. When all workers are busy doing that, there are none left to handle any other request — hence the flood of No child available to handle incoming request.

First, I’d like to know which version of ns8-sogo you are running.

Then, can you try increasing the workers_count parameter? You can do it directly via configure-module or from the NS8 UI. The rule of thumb is: one worker per EAS device using push, plus a margin for web and DAV traffic. If you have 5 iPhones, set it to at least 15.

If you can’t increase workers for some reason, there is another angle worth exploring. The ns8-sogo README documents some fine-tuning options for ActiveSync that can reduce worker pressure — specifically SOGoMaximumPingInterval, SOGoMaximumSyncInterval, and WOWatchDogRequestTimeout. Have a look at the Fine-tuning section. Tweaking these values can limit how long each Ping connection stays open and free workers faster.

Can you share the output of workers_count from your current configuration so we can see where you stand?

I’ve set the workers to 15. Looks better now

I also noticed the last few weeks that email are not pushed directly to the devices.
I need to reload (scroll down) and the i see the new recieved emails
Normally i get this pushed. I must say that since i use Sogo this was never wondefull and was there always a long delay in receiving the mail on the server and on the device
I have not enabled DAV so this must not be an issue

But why do i see this in the log

Good news, 15 workers was the right call for your setup.

About the email push delay — I think this is expected behavior. Your SOGoInternalSyncInterval is set to 30 seconds. That means SOGo checks for new mail every 30 seconds internally before notifying the device. If you want faster push, try lowering it to 10 seconds. It adds a bit more database load but the difference is noticeable.

About the log warnings — I wouldn’t worry about those. The no key found for sorting, using 'DATE' is just SOGo falling back to date sorting when IMAP returns no sort capability. The entry already exists in DAV permissions table is a known cosmetic issue in SOGo’s ACL initialization. Both are harmless.

Let me know if the push delay improves after tuning SOGoInternalSyncInterval.

The delay i’m experiencing is not seconds, but minutes (30+) up to hours
So do you expect SOGoInternalSyncInterval will change this ?

And where do i need to change this. i remember it must in a template ?? Sorry :flushed_face:

check the /home/sogo1/.config/state/environment file you have the vars you can modify then restart the sogo service with the UI, adpat sogo1 to your need

Ok. I leave it to 30 seconds since that more then fast enough (if it is 30 sec. :wink: )

I see this when i enter the Sogo podmon
Can this be of any harm ?

About the podman error — I wouldn’t worry. This message appears because the rootless podman storage was initialized with vfs at some point and now detects a mismatch with overlay. It’s cosmetic noise on exec. It doesn’t affect how the container runs. I see it on many NS8 instances.

About the WOWatchDog WARN — these are completely normal with ActiveSync. I see the exact same warnings on my own instance every day. Each device connected via push holds one worker in a permanent long-poll Ping loop. The WOWatchDog fires a WARN after 1 minute because it can’t distinguish a legitimate Ping from a stuck request. It’s just the watchdog being paranoid. As long as you don’t see No child available to handle incoming request anymore, you are fine. With 15 workers and only 6 devices you have plenty of margin.
