Server freeze | Kernel Error

Hello,

my server freezes regularly and there are kernel messages on the console that look like a hardware problem to me.

I wrote to the provider support 2 days ago… no response.
Does anyone have any idea?

Best regards, Marko

Sorry but without more info… any idea is just throwing darts blinded and with no idea where the target is.

Bare metal server? Virtual server?
Brand? Provider? Config? Devices? Drivers used by network cards?

Similar to Nethserver crashed (kernel panic) from conntrack "nf_ct_deliver_cached_events"

  1. Server: Virtual KVM Server
  2. Provider: Netcup
  3. Config: simple mail server with one WAN-IP (RED) / Dummy LAN Interface (GREEN)
  4. Drivers Network Card: virtio

Best regards, MArko

I will try to deactivate IPS.
Thank you for the hint!

15 Minutes before kernal panic the CPU jumps to 100%

This corresponds with Suricata events.

now I feel uncomfortable disabling Suricata.

possibly the Contrack error message could also give a hint about the cause?

But I don’t understand enough about it.

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=456664

If we could be certain that suricata is using 100% of CPU we could try to debug it.
I can’t think of an easy way to detect such an issue, though.
How often does it happen? Can you correlate to some external event? A spike in inbound traffic?

I note:

  1. before the kernel panics on March 10 and 11, the network load increased moderately but significantly over hours.
  2. even more significant increases in network load on March 7 and 8 also led to higher CPU load, but not to the kernel panic.

Pictures from KVM-Web-Gui:

CCP:

Only e-mail is installed on the server, with a very low volume for 4 users. On the server side, the network loads cannot be triggered. I don’t even have (oh shame) a bakup set up.
Currently, Suricata is disabled, only Thread Shield is active.

One behavior that is not interpretable to me is the packet drops and the massive traffice on the NDSC interface.

Wich CPU Is mounted?

AMD EPYC 7702P 64-Core Processor x 2
8 GB RAM

Ahn ok,
Some old Intel consumer CPU due a bug on Linux kernel with CPU c-states causing random freezes.
Or if you have AMD, could be overheating issue on full load?

Because KVM I don’t have access to the provider’s monitoring.
But I don’t believe it.

Does the vm freeze or physical machine?

I have no information about the physical machine as it is managed by my provider. I have contacted him without getting a response.
