SAMBA - Restore AD from backup without shared files?

Hello community,

The question is only theoretical so far, but it determines (for me) to what extent I can use Nethserver 8 with AD and SAMBA shares.

As far as I know - please correct me if I’m wrong - ActiveDirectory and Samba file shares are located in the same container (e.g. samba1). The built-in backup procedure of Nethserver 8 backs up individual containers, so the restore will always affect the entire container?

Restoring an Active Directory manually seems rather difficult to me, so a container restore like the one provided in Nethserver 8 seems very practical to me.

However, an AD is not very large in terms of file size (if you ignore the home shares). However, experience has shown that file shares for groups, for example, are much more extensive. Their (selective) restoration (files and folders), on the other hand, seems much less complicated to me than restoring an AD.

In the event of a problem with the AD, would I always have to restore the entire sambaX container including all file requests? Or can this be limited to individual components, e.g. only the AD-relevant data?

How is this planned so far and wouldn’t it be more practical to separate the AD (including homes) and file shares into containers?

Or even just have a separate AD and have all file shares (homes and shares) separately as containers?

For example, it would be much more important to me to back up (for me) complex things like an AD than file shares, the contents of which could be handled quite easily using a copy command with subsequent authorization correction if necessary.

At the moment I am looking at certain problem scenarios and given the sheer size of certain file shares, I am thinking about it.

I look forward to your answers!

Regards

I’ve got the impression that AD issues like lost users did happen more often on NS7 but I didn’t find much issues regarding NS8 AD in the forum.
It’s still a good idea to be able to restore/repair the AD without the shares.

Yes, that’s true. The restic backup includes the podman volumes for the shares, homes, config etc.

This could be a possible approach as the selective restore of shares is already possible so it maybe “just” needs to be adapted to restore the AD.

There’s already a Feature request: Advanced Samba / File Server Options - an open discussion
