Questions about the topic - PING - TraceRoute

Hello everybody!

After I tested @stephdl his tool, I noticed that there are internet pages that you can not ping or the path following.

Why is that?
The site is quite normal in the network …

The PING protocol:

There are servers that chose to ignore ping or certain icmp requests.

For instance microsoft.com does not reply but www.microsoft.com does.

NethServer Firewall has a checkbox to accomplish the same.

Ok, thank you I was not aware that one can suppress the ping response.

But that the TraceRoute anyway only * * * are indicated …

Hi,

for the traceroute it is the same as a ping. It is the ICMP protocol.
For Windows Systems: If you go in the Firewall configuration on your server and enable the “File and Printer Sharing (Echo Request - ICMPv4-In)”, your server will answer to Pings. If you disable the rule, it will not.

Ping (and also traceroute) are using the ICMP Protocol for the communication.
