OpenVPN to route Wake On LAN packets

NethServer Version: 7.7.1908
Module: OpenVPN, firewall

Hello,

We have a running system OpenVPN setup as Road warrior in routed mode.

Our clients have some very simple applications for waking up their computers remotely. Unfortunately, they are to run on some computer physically connected to same LAN as their own computers.

We would like them to be able to wake their computers running the software on their end.

We have no control to have it modified that Wake On Lan software. It is one from many freely available.

Searching on the internet it seems possible, however, we are not quite sure as to how we can achieve it with NethServer.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks & regards,
Ertan

Hello

AFAIK, the “magic packet” used by WOL is sent to a MAC Address, this makes it non routable…

The easiest would be to use a simple (Web-App) with some PHP to use WOL (installed on the nethserver) to wake up the needed PCs.

My firewall provide this service, but you could eg install Home Assistant on a Raspberry or VM and use that (they have a configurable WOL Module) for your users to wake up their PCs.

My 2 cents
Andy
