is it possible to do a test NS7->NS8 migration without affecting the services and settings running on the current NS7 server?

No, because the migrated services are going to be disabled on the NS7, see also NethServer 7 migration — NS8 documentation
I recommend to test the migration using VMs with snapshots.

Sorry to hijack this post. So even if the migration failed or did not start the services on NS7 are disabled?
If so how does one enable them, I seem to have this problem.
A service gets disabled on NS7 when the migration of the service is finished.
