NS7 gateway installation to NS8?

NethServer Version: 7.9
Module: Gateway

Is it possible to recreate my Neth 7.9 gateway installation on a single dedicated computer? Would I have to install NethSecurity on a container?? I haven’t seen anything in the Docs to replicate what I have now, or, if I’ve missed it, please point me there?

Many thanks!

Hi @macwunder ,

yes, it’s possible to use both NethServer 8 and NethSecurity on one computer by using virtualization like for example Proxmox. A fast disk like ssd or nvme is required.

System requirements:
NS8: System requirements — NS8 documentation
NethSecurity: System requirements — NethSecurity documentation

In this case you’re installing NS8 and NethSecurity as VMs, not as containers.

It’s also possible to migrate from NS7 by using the migration tools:
NS8: NethServer 7 migration — NS8 documentation
NethSecurity: NethServer 7 migration — NethSecurity documentation

If you just used firewall/gateway applications on your NS7 then it may be enough to just migrate to NethSecurity.

I should have included my current NS7 uses, sorry…
In addition to being my internet gateway (firewall, dns, dhcp, proxy, and monitoring - but to a lesser importance),

It serves an AD domain for authentication to: email, SOGo (mail, calendars, contacts - local and WAN), NextCloud, and network shares. All hosted on the NS7 box.

While my intended replacement box WILL be SSD, it is only a 4-core I7, and I don’t believe will have the CPU to handle running a virtual OS plus two guests - you tell me.

I am a home user, it is possible Nethserver has outgrown me?

The apps can be migrated to NS8, in NethSecurity the squid proxy isn’t migrated, see also NethServer 7 migration — NethSecurity documentation
Content filtering in NethSecurity: Content Filtering — NethSecurity documentation

The CPU should be good enough and you need enough RAM for the virtualization OS and the VMs.
