I am sorry, but some apps I bundled or I am about to release do not fit into the current category naming convention - or require at least a high abstraction level to be understood why it is considred as “security”. I herewith ask for / propose two additional app categories:
education - e.g. my app sage math is something particularly for math students, and also the use of arsnova is specifically created for audiences in lessons / lecutres, even though it may be used for any types of talks
games - yes, sorry, I know the professional style and background of Nethserver 8, but an app server is an app server, regardless of what it is used for. Actually, I remember end of 90th working in a start up, where we turned of the main servers on friday after noon and fired up or privat server to play counter strike - not thinkable nowadays … but anyway, I intend to publish a VTT (virtual table top) solution as a nethserver app - and, I am sorry, it is a game.
Thanks for raising this, and for the SageMath/ArsNova/VTT contributions - it’s great to see the app catalog growing in these directions.
On the category question: new categories are welcome once it’s clear what applications they should contain. If two or more apps fall into a proposed category, we can consider adding it. So for “education” you’re already in good shape with SageMath and ArsNova as candidates. For “games”, if the VTT app is the only one for now, it’d help to know if you (or others) have more in mind, or if it should just wait until a second app justifies the category.
One important note: categories are intended for public repositories, so the apps in question need to be pushed to the public nethforge index, following the documented procedure for community certification: Community Certification | NS8 dev manual. Private or personal app categorization won’t be considered for the software center categories.
Once the apps are certified and in nethforge, we can look at formalizing “education” (and “games”, pending a second candidate) as categories.
