Issue with snapshots and backup

I have setup and used the VMDK, configured as an IDE drive and got the system running. the issue i am running into is snapshots and backups at the VM level.

if i try to do a snapshot of the running machine it fails with an IO error.

My backups software both XSIBackup and also the QNAP backup fails with the same error.

it seems to be down to backing up the IDE drive as i have performed checks on the drive and its says there is an issue, i have repaired the issue and it still fails the backup.

any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi @derilium

Isn’t using IDE as a drive a bit dated?
Nowadays, you can hardly find a IDE drive anymore, only on the second hand market.

VMWare is a bit limited, but even VMWare supports better VM disk systems…

Hi Andy, i agree but its what the system requires from when using the prebuilt image of nethserver 8 on VMWare.

Checking the requirements thats what it needs to be setup as

@derilium

OK

You are right, as per here:

“For VMWare, configure the virtual machine to use the IDE driver for the disk.”

Interesting that they also say:

“40GB Solid-state drive” - these were never really available with an IDE connector, but this is anyway all virtual… It just goes to show how bad VMWare has become.

I moved after 17 years of using VMWare (ESXi and others) to Proxmox in about 2015, and would never think of moving back…

Broadcom taking over just sealed VMWare for me…

Hi Andy, yep im going to move to proxmox very soon but i have a number of these Nethserver instances which i setup a few months ago and would like to get a stable backup before taking the plunge.

i had a play with proxmox recently and really like it, its a major step for me to move across so would be good to get this working even if just initially

@derilium

If you need tips and tricks for Proxmox, drop me a PM…

I’m considered the local Proxmox guy here on this Forum…

This doc I wrote may help give you some insights:

There’s a lot more you can benefit from.
Like PBS, Proxmox Backup Server… :slight_smile:

Thats great, i need to have a play with my home lab a bit and that will definitely get me in the right direction.

thanks
