Is Proxmox VE in a DMZ a good or a bad idea?

Hi Friends,

I have just read this article of @Andy_Wismer, that got me thinking.

I run a simple DMZ, which currently houses my NS8, which runs Mail, Mattermost, Nextcloud and a few other apps. This NS8 is installed on physical hardware that consumes quite a bit of power. And as we all know, electricity is very expensive in Germany. Now I’ve got myself an Odroid H4 Ultra, on which I want to run Proxmox and the NS8 as a VM in future. This is already running very well here in my local LAN. Do you think it is justifiable to put Proxmox VE in the DMZ? Of course without opening the port for Proxmox management.

Thanks for reading…

Uwe

Hi @transocean

A multi-homed Proxmox ist not much risk in the DMZ. Only one NIC can use a Gateway (eg to get updates). This would be the LAN NIC.

Add in the fact that the management doesn’t use the DMZ NIC and Proxmox is more or less secure.

My 2 cents
Andy
