In the ‘old’ days

I think the official payed for anwer will be that OnlyOffice is a community app and that you have to take it up with the auther, which you did.

THAT being said, I get your point (with mixed emotions and expectations). In the ‘old’ days, when E-smith, SME Server and NS7 were mostly community driven, and the community was an integral part of the development, testing, release, roadmap, updates and future of any kind.

Possible issues were reported, organised and fixed by the self driven community and devs, a community manager was unthinkable for the community was self driven. Thankfully there were some bright brains with a great idea/concept and a ‘funding source’ but never a controlling entity.

Possible issues were adressed to within hours (globally, folow the sun) and issues were picked up within the hour. Now it seems normal that corps have a community manager log in in between vacations with a ‘We informed our devs’ message in our own timezone.

The ‘devs’ part has been replaced with ‘Corp’ and commercial priorites have taken over the good old community driven projects. This ‘evolution’ has proved itself e.g RedHat and others.

Fact of life and I feel with you and other do too by the looks of it, for people are leaving, and I might be one of them. No loss there, It used to be fun, to me that very important aspect is lost in translation to NS8 today and into the future. Again, fact of life, and calls for choices to make.

In the 'good old days, everybody was important on the forums etc. Today it seems that only skilled devs with knowledge of a zillion tools and skill-sets are.

@LayLow I’m very sorry to read a post like this.
It’s a very critical post towards:

  • the community,
  • those who are working on it and dedicating their free time to it,
  • the developers contributing to the project.

It’s not constructive in any way, and it’s completely off-topic from the original question.

If you like the smeserver community or the “old days” so much… why are you here?
This project has always had an organization behind it and a community manager (since 2013). Why would this be a problem in 2024?

I don’t want to read posts like this anymore. They unnecessarily create a lot of confusion among people and are destructive. I’m available to discuss this with you anytime.

We’ve clarified this concept a thousand times; see here as well:

So what? It is a free world. My post may be critical but does not contain any profanity or any wrongdoing to anybody.

That is defenitely one way to scare away people. One could listen and do something with it, like a constructive discussion.

Because of NS8 and the drop of NS7 and with that the raise in certain attitude towards the community that Nethesis profits from.

Are you my mom??? What kind of bogus answer is that. Is it a command?

So? It is a free world, anybody can speak up and discuss. their worries related to this commnity, direction, quality, usefullness etc etc. Why should I have a hidden and a private conversation with you?

Thanks, but I want to discuss it with the community. Open Source does does not relate to code not only.

Please split it off as you can and do many times. Thanks.

Thank you. Now other may share their thoughts on topic.

You’re obviously having a particularly bad day today.

I can’t understand a single sentence you’re saying.

There was always a controlling entity, starting with Mitel Networks. This isn’t anything new. And certainly since you decided to make the move from Koozali SME to Nethserver, Nethesis has been behind the project.

What’s new with NS8 are two things:

  • A radical change in the structure of the system
  • An accompanying drastic reduction in the features included in the system

On the first point, leaving aside any question of the technical merits, it means there’s a whole new system to learn (and even though it’s now container-based, familiarity with Docker doesn’t seem to be very helpful), and anything we knew about the e-smith template system is pretty much useless now. That’s somewhat disorienting, but if we could learn the one, I don’t doubt we can learn this too.

The second point is somewhat more troubling. The web server, a core feature since forever, is now a beta, community app. I don’t even see where the file server has gone (though I haven’t looked very hard, as it’s been a long time since I used it). All of the routing features have been removed. And if you go back to e-smith 3, which is where I started, those three things (along with the directory server and mail) were all that existed. So, what, 60% of the original feature set is gone?

I continue to be confused by your mentions of “fun.” Perhaps you define the term differently, but I’ve been running e-smith and its progeny for about 25 years now, and “fun” has never been more than a tangential reason why. I didn’t stand up a series of home servers for “fun;” I did it because they provided capabilities I wanted (mainly web and mail services), and made it easy to operate and manage them. My interest in continuing to use NS will be in direct proportion to how well it continues to meet those needs, and not at all to do with whatever might be called “fun.”

It does seem to me that response to problem reports is slower than it was, say, a year ago.

@LayLow

It is a fact of life that times change and in the end all that remains is the realization that the only constant is constant change. And yes, I admit that I sometimes find that very difficult. But despite all my displeasure at the desolate situation, I am always been to work together constructively so that sustainable solutions can be found.

Regards…

If you allow me a third point out of my view/experiances:

  • the lack of control of a stable IT in a small company

Too much dependencies a SME admin is able to control on his own. Way too much different parties in the game of “welcome in the world of containers”.

Small correction if I may, starting with Joe Morrison with his wife with a great vision and serving the lesser fortunate communities like schools and (remote) communities. They created a “all in one” and “Easy to maintain” “Server and gateway”.

It seems that the language barrier plays a role in the development and future of NS (SMB, SME, e-smith, pick your flavor)

I do not speak Italian. I DO speak 4 other languagues, just not Italian.

That’s ok.

Yes, and I appreciate that for doing so AT THAT TIME. Today is another story,

A radical change in the reason of the existance if I may say so.

I know and I appreciate you for that. Don’t let any other comment make you feel different. Hence your freely spoken words have sustained time.

Exactly, corp promises have overtaken the core values of what once was e-smith, SME Server.

But no harm done, it is a free world, Everybody can shar their thoughts.

I am just confused about my emotion of the Mussolini style “I do not tollerate this or that”

Hence I appreaciate your community driven thoughts. Open as always.

Strike 3! This is not your world, you own nobody. What are you thinking. Does Nethesis know what you are doing? Let’s have a talk with Philipe and Christian shall we, for it seems to have an effect on their business. Or are you trying to hide the mess for them?

What does OPEN mean to you???

We are the leading Italian producer of Open Source solutions for business.

Ok, so goodbye to the rest of the world. Nethesis has taken in all it wanted.

What the F** happed to core values??

Ah, Italy is sleeping, NethServer subscibed support is made for Italians only when they are awake. Hence the rest of the world is moving on to other things. Only “Open” when we are are “Open”. Nobody knows when.

What has been YOUR biggest achievement to the benefit of the community since then?

Oh, sorry, not posted in Italian TZ and whilst you are/are not on holiday. So maybe by next week week can continue this chat?

Reading this again Phone home included in NS8? - #7 by Tbaile

What are the numbers of NS8 installs today, by geo region and other details specifically? I saw many reasons why not whilst before it could?

Not a very hard question is it, By the way, is the "phone home’ system in NS8 still compliants with GDPR?

I make this request under the EU GDPR regulations by this date.

Thanks for all the effort!

Why did Nethesis not start a program to send their old laptops (or brand new ones) to community members in need? Tax deductable also in Italy, so?

How come none of the offical dealers of Nethesis (in the hundreds) are not present/praticipating on these forums? Contractual thingy??

To me, the feeling of Nethesis making money of off the back of this community without really giving back, is growing by the day.

We had the "we feel sad’ stories, the ‘we do our best’ stories. But never was anybody involved in the planning of the evosultion of E-smith/NS7. All we got was a done deal and ‘please comment’. It really seems like a huge money making scam off of the back of Open Source and Community.

They are there, they are there. In disguise but they are there.
