How can you re-install the GUI?

Hello,

I’m just going to perform my transition from Zentyal to NS, all core functions work wonderfully!

One more thing I’m missing and I can not find in the manual.

And I will like to have a graphical interface, but when I set up the basic system with minimal GUI everything not going so smoothly.

As I said to the pure server operation I need no GUI, but the computer is in my basement and now and then I would like to be there weas search the net or just listen to the music tinker.

I know a server has other more important tasks … but nice it would be!

Are you speaking about a DE like gnome or xfce, KDE etc… !?

Remember that webui will overwrite administration parts like interface configurations, user accounts…
I never tested a DE on NethServer so I can’t help you more than this…

I would think if you want an interface that wont break it, I have been testing webmin, and that holds stable and its plenty GUI, as a desktop that would need to be tested out, and we are not to that point. It could be it would break the distro as you said above… we will sort that avenue if it ever comes to an issue with a community request

I installed an X desktop on a test server, everything was smooth and it works.
The “minimal desktop” installs 399 packages, using 754 M of disk space (and you need to download 244 M).
Command:

yum groupinstall basic-desktop desktop-platform x11 fonts

To manually start the X windows system:

startx

To start at every boot:

sed -i "s/^id:3/id:5/" /etc/inittab

I am trying to install X desktop following your guide but I get the following error:-

Loaded plugins: changelog, fastestmirror, nethserver_events, presto
Setting up Group Process
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile

  • epel: ftp.riken.jp
  • nethserver-base: mirror.nethesis.it
  • nethserver-updates: mirror.nethesis.it
    Warning: Group basic-esktop does not exist.
    Warning: Group desktop-platform does not have any packages.
    Warning: Group x11 does not have any packages.
    Warning: Group fonts does not have any packages.
    No packages in any requested group available to install or update

How can I fix this? Thanks :smile:
