How can we install ffmpeg for Nextcloud Memories module?

Firstly, happy new years to everyone! May 2024 be awesome for you!

NethServer Version: 7.9
Module: Nextcloud 27.1.3

I recently installed the Memories module of NextCloud. It looks to have ffmpeg installed so it can create video previews.

I’ve been searching and can’t find ffmpeg in the repo after doing a yum search.

Is there a way to find and install ffmpeg on Nethserver so it can be used by this module of Nextcloud?

Thanks in advance.

Try enabling the ‘epel’ or ‘remi’ repo and search again. Just don’t install anything you find and read carefully, e.g. forums and wiki.

Some options:

  • download static builds and use as drop-in binaries.
  • install from RPM Fusion repo.
  • build from source

Thank you for your guidance. I will look into your suggestions and do some more reading in the forums about epel. I can see that could be better but might run the risk of screwing up something that nethserver installs and maintains. I think that is what both of you are cautioning about.

Thank you for the quick and helpful suggestions.

I have downloaded and installed the static build binary from the link in @dnutan 's post.

I moved the ffmpeg and ffprobe binaries to /usr/local/bin/

For some reason the Memories app gui continues to say it can’t find ffmpeg but when I run occ maintenance:repair from the terminal the output says ffmpeg binary is configured: /usr/local/bin/ so I am assuming that it will work.

Thanks again for your help.
