I use emClient as mail programme for the desktop (MacOS).
To be able to send mails, I had to configure the parameter --force-smtp-auth PLAIN.
Is this due to a special server configuration? Am I running any risks by doing this?
Otherwise, port 143 with SSL/TLS and port 587 with SSL/TLS are used.
The combination of StartTLS and PLAIN is safe for your client.
According to the manual, the server offers both PLAIN and LOGIN authentication methods over secure connections. StartTLS is considered secure and is available on both ports, 143 and 587. You can refer to more details here: NS8 Mail Client Configuration
