On ns7 the upstream dovecot package is compiled against the clucene library. It’s easy to enable the Lucene index that should speed up the IMAP full-text search feature. More info: http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/FTS

Is it really that fast?

I think we should enable the fts_autoindex=yes option, as documented on Dovecot’s wiki. However to evaluate this feature properly I would need a real-world mail server (or a copy of it at least) with big mailboxes, so I opted for the more conservative setup at the moment. What do you think?

Can we test it using body search on SOGo or Webtop?

Yes, of course. However I find the IMAP server response more informative for the test purpose.
