Discourse for NethServer 8

I published a new module: Discourse, the community forum, packaged for NethServer 8.

It runs the official discourse/discourse image, with PostgreSQL and Redis in the same rootless pod. There is no custom image to maintain, and Renovate follows the Discourse ESR releases.

Features

  • Local administrator account created from the NS8 Settings page, no email needed to activate it
  • Optional login with an external OpenID Connect provider (Keycloak, Authentik…), local accounts keep working
  • Emails sent through the cluster smarthost, with a configurable sender address
  • Default forum language chosen at configuration time
  • Let’s Encrypt certificate and HTTPS through Traefik
  • Backup, restore, clone and move
  • UI translated in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese and Basque

Install

Add my repository in the Software Center settings:

https://forge.de-labrusse.fr/ns8/updates/

Then install Discourse from the Software Center, or from the command line:

add-module discourse 1

Open the Settings page and fill in the host name, the administrator username, email and password. The first start runs the database migrations and takes one to two minutes.

Good to know

  • Discourse wants at least 15 characters for an administrator password.
  • The settings managed by NS8 (host name, email, language, OpenID Connect) are locked in the Discourse admin page. Change them from NS8.
  • For OpenID Connect, register Discourse in your provider with the redirect URI https://<your-host>/auth/oidc/callback. The Settings page shows it.
  • Let’s Encrypt is turned off after a restore or a move, because the host name may not resolve on the new node. Turn it on again from Settings.
  • Plan 2 GB of RAM or more for the instance.
