NethServer Version: 7.9 Module: mail
and maybe others…
Hello everyone.
I’m using nethserver 7.9 for years - at home, for family only.
I do use DNS, DHCP, Firewall, reverse-proxy, mail, roundcube, nut, but other services are separate behind the FW on a proxmox.
So I don’t do too much with neth. This is to bind between internal & external and to keep and manage the mail for us.
As I can’t update anymore, I have to move to 8. I don’t fear a reconfiguration, but all the mailconnectors and locally stored inboxes of my 6 users are important enough to move them over to neth8. I can create the users on neth8, no problem (was localLDAP). But which folders do I need to copy from 7.9 and restore on 8 to have the mailconfiguration / connectors and inboxes on the new server?
I read about the migration path to cluster and than migrate, but I would like to start from scratch to have a clear new system (but with the old mail data).
Can someone point me to the right information maybe?
With NethServer 8 network/firewall services moved to NethSecurity, a UTM/firewall based on OpenWRT. NS8 is now an application server based on podman containers, see also Introduction — NS8 documentation
Except of mail and roundcube all apps you’re using on NS7 are now available on NethSecurity. DNS, DHCP and reverse proxy are available on both NS8 and NethSecurity.
IIUC you’re using NS7 as firewall and mail server so it could work to update the NS7 with NethSecurity and create a VM on Proxmox for NS8 for the mails.
Don’t forget to set right owner.
You can find details about the mail migration in the migration tool script on Github.
NS8 isn’t deeply integrated in the operating system anymore, it’s more on top which makes it possible to have a clean system and software management, even after migration. It’s also possible to migrate for example only LDAP, mail and roundcube to NS8.
many thanks for your detailed and really helpful response!
The big advantage - using a small box pc with two network if’s - to act as firewall and mail system seems to be gone.
I’m very sorry to read this. I think I’ve missed the logic to take away one of the unique features of this system. Now I have to look if I can run both nethsec and ns8 on the same barebone. If this is possible, I will continue with neth8 - which was the best solution I used in the past - if not, I may go back to console and do all the required setup manually in /etc again. I hoped that 2025 is the time where linux configuration from the command line isn’t required anymore…
Hmm… As the CVS vulnerability score for the current neth7.9 is 10! i have to find an alternate solution now.
Many thanks again for your answers, I’ll keep them in mind while moving forward,
Yes, I know. And it adds complexity (and I have a proxmox already… ;).
This is my home network and what would happen if I’m ill? I’m 55 and I have to think about situations I don’t want to think about ;-). I’m trying to do the setups as simple as possible with easy automated backup/restore options and I teached my kids already…
Maybe I put a new ns8 for mail on my proxmox while putting OPNSense on the 2 NIC box in front… I don’t know yet, but I learned that I can’t continue running all on the NS anymore.
You misunderstood - I don’t fear technology since my first VC20… I simply know, that someone needs to take over if I’m gone. So I try to keep the balance to avoid some of the fancy stuff in home “production”, to ensure my family will be able to continue with the basics…
