Contabo think tank

Hello friends, I would like some reviews on contabo and their offer for a vps (6 cores and 12GB ram, SATA SSD), it seems to run well but I am not really satisfied by the network speed, about 6MB of download, 30MB of upload

I feel the speed was better this sunday when I installed the server, what do you think, feel, about this provider

it is a personal usage for family, looking to kill my NS7

Contabo promises 200 Mbit/s to 1 Gbit/s speeds but my 3 servers (Europe hub) have between 19MB to 35MB upload/download.

Tested with speedtest-cli and Ookla speedtest.

Cloud VPS 20 NVMe (NS8 Rocky):

Download: 300.09 Mbps (data used: 139.4 MB) → 35MB
Upload: 298.32 Mbps (data used: 335.3 MB) → 35MB

VPS S NVMe (NS8 Debian):

Download: 201.09 Mbps (data used: 103.0 MB) → 23MB
Upload: 198.57 Mbps (data used: 226.0 MB) → 23MB

VPS S SSD (NS7) :

Download: 194.78 Mbit/s → 23MB
Upload: 166.54 Mbit/s → 19MB

  • MB/s is calculated by dividing Mbps by 8.

it seems quite close for what they promised, the difference is that I went to a SATA SSD but it is not the issue I believe, maybe the installation has triggered some volume and they are limiting me :expressionless:

It seems they’re having some “interruptions”, see https://contabo-status.com/

I did a new tour with rsync and 1TB file, upload and download are good, about 70MB/s, I am happy you get 3 vps, I think for the price it is valuable

I have been using Contabo for many years. Cheap, reliable, broad range of services. Uptime 98%

Helpdesk is supportive and can repsond 24/7

Billing procedure good, with heads up emails if something may go wrong.

My case: Home/SMB usage

Can you explain how to hook up this object storage, if ordered seperately, to an existing NS8 VPS please? I may want to do this if possible for off server backup storage.

Get the Bucket URL:

Get the Access Key and Secret key:

Add an S3 compatible destination in NS8:

Enter the Bucket URL that you got from the first step in the “Bucket address” field, but without https like shown in the screenshot.
Enter the access key in the “Access key ID” field.
Enter the secret key in the “Secret access key” field.

Interesting but you have only one nic, how can you do that ?

Physically I have nothing at ‘home(office)’. NS8 is at Contabo as a VPS, and my devices connect to it from anywhere (also using wg-easy from public places e.g. hotels).

ps. and I use https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt300n-v2/ too while on the move. Soon to be replaced with this one or even better this one. Essential security at a very small cost.

and

What to do please?

With access and secret keys:

Without keys not possible, required.

The bucket URL is not reachable, so I enabled public sharing and used that URL. Still no go.

poor performance with active sync and sogo, I needed to switch to carddav/caldav else my server was on the knees

did you find it @mrmarkuz @LayLow
