Conquring the Apps Gap: A call for Support

Hello All, This thread is mainly a last resort effort in our endeavours.

What initially began as a means to understand the inner workings of NS8, has since turned into Alot more. Over the Last 12 Months, We dedicated Effort in Building and Implementing NS8 App.

I knew that at the time, the Nethserver dev could not really much focus on adding apps, as they needed to work on stabilizing ns8, as well as getting the most important core apps to the platform.

We have so Far Built Over 70 NS8 Applications here

Approximately 41 of them which are listed in the Genforge Repo under the testing branch. While others still floating on our github repo

This Endeavour has not been easy. with some moules requing us to build custm docker images, maintain them, and in some cases, running out of free build credits from Github, that require us to get commercial runners.

the cost implications
This Endeavour i must Admit has not been easy or cheap. We have spent Commulatively slightly above $8000 To bring these Apps over the Last 12 Months. Salaries, Internet costs for dev, Servers, Domains, etc

@ kemboielvis22 is a full time Staff working on building and eventually Help in supporting these Apps, As i create time usually late in the night to build, guide, test and scope on status and state of matters.

Testing
One of our biggest challenge is testing these tools, reporting and documenting issues found. this takes the most of the time, and wish there is something more we can do about it.

We Also took the TIme to Building an Automated Module Generator, Available here: geniusdynamics/ns8-module-generator
thats not yet been announced.

What’s happening
You might have noticed over the last few months, there has been some slowdown from our end, this is due to some constraint we are facing, which is significantly hindering our ability to effectively Deliver. In that Regards we would like to Call on the community for Support.

Support
We do not have or have figured out any way to generate income from what we are doing, we were so far just happy it will help the community, as we figure the rest out moving forward.

We would love to Atleast get All project production ready, As well as start and complete the projects listed on the Board here Nethserver

We are looking for something in the range of $4,000 To make this Happen.

It’d be easy enough to give you access to one or more VPSs, I’d think–what would you need in that regard?

And as between Github and PayPal, which results in your getting more of the contribution (i.e., which one takes less in the way of fees)?

That would be really helpful :slightly_smiling_face:

yes fast bandwidth for developers is something important, I have the fiber at home, but I Know that developers relies on digital ocean because the internet provider at home is not reliant or fast enough, and this sometime even at the headquarter :stuck_out_tongue:

PayPal costs the most, arrives sooner or almost immediately.

Github barely deducts any fees so we get full value. Releases on monthly cycles to bank.

We received some contribution 3 months ago, which with github terms, the first release cycle is held for 90 days. Then subsequently monthly.

We’ve recently not received github contributions, only paypal.

For my internet it’s less than 10mbps which is very frustrating at times

I understand

It’s a lot of apps to have developed, and pretty useful ones at that. I might suggest Forgejo as a companion/alternative to Gitea, given the governance issues surrounding the latter. But worth supporting regardless.

I think looking at the foregejo yaml file, our Module generator should be able to pull it off

Just added a Pgsql with Runners YAML to our projects

I think it is long overdue for Nethsesis to provide institutional support for its external developers when attractive apps are used to enhance the attractiveness of Nethserver as a whole, while they have to work and live under precarious conditions.

Good work Martin. I hope you can continue this.
I also hope NethServer/Nethesis will support you with this work. Usable applications are key to get NS8 adopted.

That was the Idea actually. We had actually meant that, After these apps were readily available, We would then Make business related videos on youtube.

Hopefully we are still abe to get this done in the near future.

Did’nt sound well…

It’s very disappointing that there is no statement from Nethesis here.

Not even an offer of help…
