Some hints on proxmox please

There’s a lot to play for.

Yes, and reading this for n times, the stop show for w2k:

http://www.motherboard.windowsreinstall.com/problems.htm

Of course this server uses RAID.
But, reading further I see option 3 "IBD Solution 3: Load mass storage drivers for new motherboard during setup: "; seems to me that when I read “solution 2” I was interrupted or disappointed (I got a lot of support to give at work and tend to forgot what I’m doing :upside_down_face:).

this is where MergeIDE helps!

You can even let it use simple IDE, Win2000 will still boot up and not complain!

But it NEEDS to be done before any migration / cloning…

-> I had to let my Win2000 Advanced Server run in Proxmox under IDE drives - but it was as fast or even faster than on the old hardware! (AND running in the NAS, not locally, but still faster!)

So you want to try with the win7?

I’m thinking, this PC is critical and used all day; I need to plan when to do it.
First install the merge IDE
And follow the steps to got it work and first.

I like to do the same with the server too; but our ERP, NEEDs that server for user authentication; that’s why I need to un join from the old SBS and join on Nethserver.

Choices, choices.

A coin toss, or dice can help…

In the end, all have to be done, might as well start with one…

The first choice, like the Win7 is usually the best.

If you can, do a backup of that box.

Install MergeIDE.

Check the status of all disks (Windows / CHKDSK).

Reboot

When all is OK, then do a clone with Clonezilla or any other tool (Acronis, Storagecraft)

Note:

No matter what the old hardware server used, RAID1 or RAID5, it doesn’t matter anymore in Proxmox.
It’s NOT the duty of a VM to protect against a failed disk, that’s the duty of Proxmox or - in your case - your NAS. And they both do that well!

O yes, the Thing is:
I recently join to an University; to study a new carer, guess what?
Telematics; precisely because I want to learn all the stuff that we are talking. It’s my first year, and I’m already a week behind on schoolwork. (shame)

Well, by doing what you are doing now, you’re “speeding” by the other students in practical proved knowledge, with all the gory details of stuff like vLANs…

The other students are in the “slow” lane…

Yes, but is a little sad to be slow on assignments and it’s a lot to do at work. I need to learn not to sleep.

First year is like a common for any one of us: programming, statistics, Human development; next semester, will be differential calculus (I forgot a lot of these), and other 2 that I don’t remember. Until 2nd year, I think will see things related.

See it from the bright side:

By the time you get in your studies to “gritty” stuff like vLANs, Virtualization, and so on, others will have “heard” about these stuff. You’ve actually done this…

Yes, just need to pass this semester, then next, and the next.

OK, I need to install both IDEMerge and plan for a reboot. I the cloning can be done fast enough I can try to migrate the windows 7 first.

Wow it’s friday; and I work from home at Saturday, so I can advance in work stuff related: I’m programming a desktop application to link the payment receipts to the accounting policies. This project is already months behind schedule.

@MrE

Tomorrow is 1st of August, also a Saturday here, but out “National Day”, a public holiday…

After seeing all your infrastructure, you never seem to rest. I wonder if you rest on holidays.

Now, that’s another interesting concept - holidays…

IT is one of my hobbies, like music…

Hi Enrique.

Remember that on the first year, all universities do all kind of tricks to kick you out and on the second year and so on, they do all kind of tricks to keep you in.

The first year is bad but after that it’s a lot easier…

Yes, I remember that in my student years; the tricky subject to reduce the student population was mathematics, precisely calculus.

I hope this is not the case, in this university; I really believe that one gets out oneself because of professional occupations, problems. Covid has made a dent in the employment of some colleagues.

Changing the subject a bit. I wonder if in Europe they have come out of this plague; in Mexico many people continue to doubt and fall ill, even dead.

Regards and keep safe (@Andy_Wismer, @michelandre)

Same problem here:

Some are plain stupid, a lot are conspiracy advocates…
Covid19 exists, not as deadly maybe as thought in the beginning, but it’s there…

Keep safe!

Math: It’s as simple as the square root of 4…

(Fully correct would be 2 and -2, both multiplied by itself equals 4!)
Known as one of the simpler examples of trapdoor maths, you can calculate it one way, but not backwards…
