Software Center Takes Minutes to Respond

NethServer Version: 7.4.1708
Module: server-manager Software center

I installed a fresh Nethserver installation, and after install, the software center in server-manager takes many minutes to display. The problem sounds similar to a 2015 community post titled “Software Center Empty”.

Nethserver is installed on a Intel server, dual core Core2 Duo, E8400 3.0GHz 8GB RAM. A previous installation on this same hardware was my home gateway, but I removed it after the routing function became unreliable, for reasons I dont understand, replacing it with a Netgear router which has worked fine.

After the fresh Nethserver installation, because Software Center was unresponsive, I did several other Nethserver fresh installs, including on a different machine, although with the same SSD drive, and Software Center took minutes to load.

The first several times I had it configured with only a LAN connection, but this time it is configured as follows:

GBE (red) DHCP → existing LAN, getting an IP address of 10.20.30.75 from the existing DHCP server

GBE (green) LAN with the Nethserver DHCP server addresses from 10.20.50.51 to 10.20.50.99. Ath moment, there is only one computer via a direct connect cable to the LAN NIC.

My internet connection usually tests (from the diagnostics page in server-manager) ~10 Mbps upload and ~90 Mbps download.

Following suggestions from the earlier post, I did a yum update from the console, and it processed 292 updates. Other than two warnings, which scrolled off before I could capture them, no errors.
I then did:
yum clean all --enablerepo=*

I also disabled IPv6 using:

sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6=1
sysctl -w net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1

I ran yum repolist -v and curl -v -L ‘http://mirrorlist.nethserver.org/6.7/nethserver?release=6&repo=updates&arch=x86_64’ (suggested in the prior post).

When running “yum repolist -v” the output usually pauses for a long time after the line: “Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile”

Also, after I rand those commands, after waiting many mninutes for Software Center to complete its display, I selected one package from Software Center to install, and the process is proceding much slower tnan I was used to and is now crawling along at 87% at Event runlevel-adjust.

Hello @harry,

I tested it on NS6 now and Software Center and yum are working properly. Do you still face the issues?

Another thing to try:

rm -rf /var/cache/yum
yum clean all
yum --disableplugin=fastestmirror update

@mrmarkuz,

Thank you. I had also done the removal of the yum cache previously, but did again. I didn’t disable the fastestmirror, because after changing DNS servers, the installation started working. I don’t know enough about how DNS caching works to make a better guess, but I think my problem was in that area. In any case, I went back and did a clean install again, and it is working.

This issues can be closed.

Thanks for clarifying, you are able to close the topic yourself. Just mark your answer about changing DNS as solution so others with Software Center problems are able to see what was your solution.
