after issuing the command to switch off maintenance mode once again (answer: it is alredy switched off), and yet another reboot, it now works…
frustrating, but hey, it works…
I think the message is from apache, not related to nextcloud maintenance mode.
I think you’re correct here–the Nextcloud maintenance mode message would look completely different.
