Issues/things to improve with NS8b1

Fine, but so be it. For me, Nethserver is such a brilliant OS that I’m happy to pay for it. If only because it has been far more reliable than any server OS from Microsoft in the past. But apart from the monetary part of the story…, this wonderful community is actually priceless and also irreplaceable. I’m thinking first and foremost of the always helpful specialists like @Andy_Wismer, @mrmarkuz, and not to forget @stephdl. Do we really want to expect them to fight their way through three different OS substructures Alma, Debian and Rocky in the future? With only one OS as the base system, this question would be answered. I for one like to plan for the long term. And exactly for this reason I need a long-lived OS with appropriate support. And honestly, what use is it to the developers of NS 8 if Red Hat closes more and more doors in the future.

Well.

We’re talking about a SERVER. Now - what does that mean? STABLE, STABLE, STABLE. Behind for SME, easy to administrate. For me at first - stable, stable and stable.

How to achieve?

Don’t put all eggs in one nest. I understand the change from NS7 to NS8 in this way. At least the idea behind. (If I’m wrong please correct.)

The con? A lot more work - I MEAN A LOT MORE WORK - for the devs. Even with containers, it’s pretty easy to stall any container. Because any change of the underlying OS can potentially kill your server (container). And the devs have to take care synchronously to any underlying OS’s. Pretty interesting for updates of the underlying OS. How to know if it’s safe to update?

The pro? If - I MEAN IF - the devs can manage to maintain and keep up with any change , I mean ANY CHANGE with a potentailly impact to any container (there are a lot possibilities) of the underlying OS, your server is pretty safe. The hope is to be safer as to put all your eggs in just one nest.

I started over 40 years ago on WANG, so my experience in all this years doing (or being responsible for) IT is, keep it simple. KEEP IT SIMPLE (AND STUPID) for SME. Searching for the swiss army knife is always a long run. And very expensive.

Anyway, if migration from NS7 to NS8 will run smooth, I’ll give a try. For me with debian as underlying OS. Always keeping in mind, that if our IT doesn’t work, our production lines (not only the production, of course) will stand still. And a lot of customers and employees will be not amused.

We’re not a family network/email/photo/video/appointment/share/chat home server. We do always have to keep our business running. I don’t want to offend anybody in here trying to be more important. It’s just the way it is for our company.

Why I’m writing this? Because I’m a little afraid that (any) devs are working in their ivory towers. And because I know time and money is limited.

To close with Andy: my 2 cents (Andy, pls forgive me for the plagiarism)

regards, stefan
